Swedish No Longer Accepting United Healthcare Insurance

Poppa2B sent me some info I thought I’d pass along to the Seattle mamas.

“Swedish Hospitals and Doctors in the Seattle area will no longer accept United HealthCare insurance. For the Doctors it becomes effective next month, and the hospitals become effective in October. I know you have a lot of moms that read your blog and now that you’re involved with Seattle Mom Blog this might be something of interest. I can imagine a pregnant mother all of a sudden having the insurance company and her Doc/Hospital no longer doing business and the fear of having to change at the worst possible time. The news on Swedish website says they hope United will still cover for the long term like pregnancy, but this isn’t a secured thing. I am unable to find anything on the United Health Care page, but I will try to get an answer soon. I can’t send in a question because for some reason their computer system has an error. Makes me wonder how many other people in the area is demanding the same answers from them… ”

Thanks Poppa!

  1. A good friend of mine is covered by United and she complained that they frown at alternative medicine such as doulas or homeopathic doctors.

  2. Oops–wanted to add the link to the Times story this week: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/326570_swedish07.html

Also, they frown upon, not at. I wonder if my insurance covers brain farts.

  3. I was able to contact UHC and ask about extended care for pregnancy and other long term medical care. They have a form that you need to request, fill out and return. That should extend the contract agreement until the treatment is finished. With pregnancy, it’s 3rd trimester and/or 6 weeks after delivery. Best advice is to contact UHC before the cutoff dates of Sept. 8 for physicians and Oct. 8 for hospitals.

  4. Thanks for the heads up, Poppa2B! We’re covered by UHC and this news will definitely help our family.

  5. I have UHC and had my baby at Swedish. I’m SO upset by this news. They told us about this (via e-mail) at work last week.

I’m glad I’m not currently pregnant…but since we do plan to have more kids (maybe…one day), this is crappy news.

I’m just hoping they don’t really drop us.

  6. The latest news. It appears that UHC mailed information out last Friday saying the same thing we already know. Sometime between Friday and today there was a 60 day extension added and both sides have agreed to start talking again.
