“Halloween” candy. Riiiiiight.

Let’s be honest with ourselves, folks, even if the marketers won’t. It’s barely a third of the way through September. All that “Halloween” candy on the supermarket shelves really isn’t intended to last through Halloween. It’s intended to be eaten now, so that by the time Halloween actually does roll around, you have to go out and buy more. So let’s call it what it really is: just plain candy. (To be totally forthcoming about this, I have to admit that I fell into the trap and bought some Autumn Mix Mello-Cremes from Target, then ate most of the package all by myself before the afternoon was out. They were made with real honey. Oh good… if they were made with fake honey, they might do something bad like rot my teeth.)

So let’s not delude ourselves. Go ahead and buy that candy in the stores. It might be black, brown, orange and yellow to trick us into thinking that it has a chance of lasting in our pantries until Halloween. But if it’s in your house, you’ll eat it.

  1. When I saw the candy corns on sale for .88 cents at Rite Aid this week I got all giddy. I bought some and have been happily eating them at my desk all week!

  3. It must just irk the marketers to no end that the one main holiday in September happens so early on they’ve got nothing really to do until Halloween. No one’s really seized upon Michaelmas (September 29), though I suppose it’s only a matter of time.

  4. I went to Target, I saw the displays, I almost succumbed. If I buy it now, I WILL eat it!

  5. Well, I’ve started my usual habit of picking up two bags of candy every week until Halloween. That gives me enough to hand out, less all the “sampling” we NEED to do in the meantime, of course….
