Are You Prepared?

Do you remember last winter, winter of a thousand disasters. We were flooded, froze, and blown away. I don’t know about you all but we were without power for a full week after the great wind storm of ‘06. Luckily we’d recently had a church disaster drill and were fairly well prepared for everything that hit us. Our church emergency people just sent out an email, warning of another upcoming storm.

I’m not going to to take on the role of Seattle Mom Blogs weather watcher but I did want to let you know that it looks like another winter wind storm is on the way. It’s not supposed to be as bad as last year’s but it is scheduled to hit the Puget Sound tomorrow, Thursday October 17th, between 2 and 8pm with high winds, projected loss of power and fallen trees.

That’s right folks. If it goes according to projections, it will happen right during the afternoon commute. So do yourself a favor and plan ahead. Leave work early if you can. Put fresh batteries in your flashlight, produce in your fridge and gas in your car. I normally bake bread on Thursdays but I’m gonna do it tonight to be sure we have the food we need.

You know that since I’m posting this, the wind won’t be strong enough to blow out a birthday candle, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

The weather report can be found here.

  1. You want to know something funny? My husband is out there right now - Mr. Prepared - making sure the generator has gas and giving it a test run since we haven’t fired it up in a while. Sheesh!

I am totally not knocking being prepared, I just think he’s a guy who wants an excuse to play with his toys.

I will probably eat my words when my roof blows off like it did last year.

  2. Ha ha, Kathryn our local weather girl! :)
But in all seriousness, I’m glad you posted this. Must stock up on candles and make sure I know where at least ONE flashlight with batteries is (last year I was ridiculously unprepared)

  3. My husband just e-mailed me a link to the Seattle-area Red Cross with a list of what to do around your house to be prepared for high winds, as well as a semi-list of stuff to have on hand for power outages. Thanks for the reminder that we need to be prepared.

  4. And he wanted to know why we have twenty-bazillion flashlights and only one works. Maybe that’s because we have two three-year-olds who are totally obsessed with flashlights.
